‘Captain Planet’ Live-Action Remake Finds New Home – OutLoud! Culture

The live-action adaptation of Captain Planet is moving forward, though not in the original way initially envisioned.

Captain Planet, also known as Captain Planet and the Planeteers, is an animated superhero series created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner. It first aired in September 1990 and lasted for six seasons.

Previously, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way was working to develop a live-action Captain Planet film for Paramount Pictures, with writers Glen Powell and Jono Matt attached. However, according to Deadline, the rights to Captain Planet eventually reverted to Warner Bros. Discovery. Despite Powell’s enthusiasm for the project, especially after his success with Top Gun: Maverick, the film was shelved.

Instead of a movie, the project has shifted to a live-action series for Netflix. The show is being produced by Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, Appian Way, and Warner Bros. Television. Tara Hernandez is set to write the series, with DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson, Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman serving as executive producers. While Leonardo DiCaprio is no longer involved, Jono Matt remains a producer.

The series will follow five teenagers who team up with the superhero Captain Planet to combat environmental disasters. The original animated series was produced by DIC Enterprises for Seasons 1-3 and Hanna-Barbera for Seasons 4-6. Berlanti, known for his work in the superhero genre with the DC universe on CW, brings experience to this adaptation. This is Berlanti Productions’ second major live-action adaptation of a beloved Warner Bros. animated property for Netflix, after the upcoming Scooby-Doo origin series. Netflix has also produced popular series like You, co-created by Berlanti.

As of now, there are no announced plot details, casting, or release date for Netflix’s live-action Captain Planet.
