Alex G debuted new album at intimate, sweaty NYC show (pics, video)

Alex G will be in NYC this fall for big shows at Radio City Music Hall on October 8 and Kings Theatre on October 9, but ahead of those, and on the eve of the release of his major label debut, Headlights, he stopped in NYC for a very intimate show at The Ground’s indoor soccer field. With the temperature in the upper 80s well into the night on Thursday and not a lot of air circulation in the room, it was sweltering, but those the heat were rewarded with a very special set. Alex played solo, switching off between guitar and keyboards, and he started the night by playing most of Headlights, giving much of the album its live debut. He asked if the rumbling in the background was a train going over the Manhattan Bridge (it was), and he also played “Good Green,” a song he’d held off the new album. Following the new material, we got a full second set of older favorites. That’s when the singalongs really started in earnest, and despite the heat, attendees tried to cheer him back out for an encore at the end of the evening. See pictures and attendee-taken video from the show below.

Headlights is out now, and you can read our review and pick up our exclusive, limited edition opaque fruit punch vinyl variant.

Alex’s tour begins in September, and ahead of that he plays Newport Folk Festival later this month.
