23 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
DUCKS LTD. AND LUNAR VACATION – “LLOYD, I’M READY TO BE HEARTBROKEN” (CAMERA OBSCURA COVER)
Here’s another of Ducks Ltd’s collaborative covers, pairing with Lunar Vacation for their take on this Camera Obscura single. “I first heard the Lloyd Cole song ‘Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?’ when a friend played me Rattlesnakes, which became a favorite. Later I realized the Camera Obscura track was a nod to it, and I was instantly hooked—it’s an indie pop classic that channels ’80s UK influences into something fresh,” says Ducks Ltd’s Tom McGreevy. “We originally covered it during a radio session around Harm’s Way, and after playing it on tour, we decided to record it properly. Gep from Lunar Vacation did a killer vocal arrangement that elevated it.”

FRUIT BATS – “CREATURE FROM THE WILD”
About “Creature from the Wild,” the new single from his upcoming Fruit Bats album Baby Man, Eric D. Johnson says, “it’s about my dog Pinto who left this realm earlier this year. I miss him a lot. I always wanted to write a hero song about a dog and Pinto was a hero indeed. He started off as a wild animal in Baja and quickly became a swashbuckling little gentleman, worthy of many a song. We don’t deserve dogs and damnit I wish they could live forever or at least longer.”

WATER FROM YOUR EYES – “PLAYING CLASSICS”
“Playing Classics started as an attempt to transform an existing guitar piece that I had stalled on into a dance number after Rachel requested that the next album have a disco song on it – the original version was 12 minutes long,” says Water From Your Eyes’ Nate Amos. Rachel adds, “it was probably my favorite instrumental that Nate sent so it was my favorite to work on lyrically. I love disco and dance music and I had been begging him to make a super dance targeted track. I was focusing on the idea of dancing in a club despite the world falling apart outside. It was written during Brat Summer, so Charli definitely had an influence.” New album It’s a Beautiful Place is out August 22.

THE SOPHS – “DEATH IN THE FAMILY”
LA six-piece The Sophs are Rough Trade Records’ newest signing and will release their second single for the label on August 22. “Death in the Family” has a ’90s slacker rock vibe but there is lots of skill on display here. Frontman Ethan Ramon says it’s “one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. It confronts my complicated relationship with shame, and how, at a certain point, I had convinced myself I’d rather grieve a loved one than take any kind of accountability. Releasing it almost feels like purging those thoughts. Maybe it’s because I finally feel like I’m explaining myself clearly. Maybe I feel protected by my vulnerability. All I know is it means something to me.”
